when we were leaving the SnowPark on New Year’s Day ( I was headed across the Nisqually to the North District of Mount Tahoma Trails to learn how to groom with the Pisten Bully snowcat groomer) a couple came up to me to ask some question. It was snowing so hard we didn’t recognize each other till we were within a dozen feet of each other. It was my Son Seth and his Girlfriend Victoria. They had made reservations for High Hut up on the 4800ft ridge… In our grooming, we hadn’t been able to get to High Hut because of the deep drifting snow up there. It was Seth’s first snowshoeing experience and Victoria was on XC very skinny skis… I was a bit concerned that they might have difficulty getting through the deep snow up there and being able to follow the ridge to the hut in the heavy falling snow… and it would be dark in a couple hours. I voiced my concerns to Seth and he reminded me that they had been up there last summer for one of the volunteer work parties. hmmm… I’ll bet he was surprised at the difference between summer and winter up there. I proceeded to the North District and when I got into the SnowCat, I called Ralph who was the patroller up there on the radio and asked him to watch for them and if they didn’t show up before dark to please break a trail down to where I had been able to get the Alpena giant snowmobile to… He replied that they were already there and were eating a large dinner and enjoying the propane fireplace stove… relief was mine…
